Manchester Man Wins Holiday Compensation Claim

Simpson Millar Solicitors have claimed a victory for a holidaymaker from Manchester who was taken ill while vacationing at the Red Sea Holiday Village in Egypt.

The man, who travelled with First Choice, has been awarded more than £4,000 after contracting a gastric illness.

The case of Mr Griffin can be inspected at Simpson Millar’s Manchester offices.

What was going to be a happy holiday turned sour when Mr Griffin and his family got ill while at the Red Sea Holiday Village. Despite the fact that the illness was not confirmed as being the serious Cryptosporidium, Mr Griffin still won a substantial amount of money thanks to the involvement of Simpson Millar, experts in Holiday Claims.

It is believed that Mr Griffin’s illness was contracted from a water-borne bug which he may have caught while relaxing in the swimming area at the resort in Sharm El Sheikh. As a result he and his family suffered gastric illness including stomach related symptoms. These symptoms are usually linked to contaminated water or food.

Holiday Hotel Watch

Infections such as Cryptosporidium are spread when infected people swim and pass the bug via the water to other guests.

Tour operators are responsible under the Package Travel Regulations for sickness and any illness involving overseas hotels and so First Choice were liable for the compensation. Despite this responsibility, it is not common for people to follow up claims for Cryptosporidium as the illness is hard to identify. Many reps from holiday companies lay the blame on viruses or over-indulgence on the part of the holidaymaker.

Mr Griffin’s outcome was successful as evidence suggested that he has caught the germ associated with swimming pools.

He praised Paul Stevens, Simpson Millar’s experienced travel lawyer saying he was ‘very helpful and understanding’.

Paul said he was happy to have helped Mr Griffin and said: “This should fire a warning shot to tour operators who fail to operate safe swimming pools. They have a responsibility to check the hygiene around pools and do all they can to limit incidences of illness.”

First Choice hotels are all all-inclusive which may result in an increase in the number of enquiries from people who have fallen ill thanks to contaminated water.
