First Choice pays Mother and Son £6,000 for Egypt illness nightmare

Illness at the Coral Sea Splash, Egypt

Going on holiday should have been the highlight of the summer for a mother and son from Derbyshire. They had booked an all-inclusive package holiday with First Choice to stay at the Coral Sea Splash Resort in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt However; their excitement was cut short when they both became ill during the holiday.

- Have you recently been on holiday in Egypt and become ill?
- Did you book a package holiday with your tour operator?
- Did you only consume food and drink from the hotel before falling ill?

If you have found yourself answering yes to those three questions then you might wish to take action against your tour operator. Ms Wheeldon from Derbyshire decided to take action against First Choice for the illnesses she and her son suffered with.

Package Holiday Protection

Holidaymakers are encouraged to book a package holiday – flights, hotel transfers and accommodation for one inclusive price. If things go wrong in the hotel, such as you fall ill or you have an accident, and it is the hotel’s fault then protection comes in the form of the Package Travel Regulations 1992. The tour operator is liable for the improper performance of the holiday contract and you can pursue the tour operator in the UK.

Hygiene, Egyptian Style

Ms Wheeldon and her son suffered with an illness infection at the Coral Sea Splash Resort, likely to have been the water-borne infection Cryptosporidium. They suffered with vomiting, watery diarrhoea and extreme fatigue all both common symptoms of the infection.

Whilst lying ill in his bed, Ms Wheeldon’s son witnessed a barman, working in the poolside bar, fill the ice tray with swimming pool water and place it directly into the freezer. Un-hygienic practices such as these are a sure-fire way to become ill on holiday and just one example of a number of hygiene failings in Egyptian hotels.

Unfortunately, many other hotels in Egypt are similarly affected by bacterial infections including Salmonella, Campylobacter and E.Coli. These infections are the result of poor hygiene practices carried out within the hotel.
