Compensation sought following salmonella at Red Sea resort

Simpson Millar is pursuing a damages claim against TUI (UK) Ltd following illness contracted by a mother and her daughter at an Egyptian holiday hotel.

Slip trip and fall injury and accident abroad

When the illness struck in June-July 2014 our client was staying at the Red Sea Holiday Village, Sharm el Sheikh.

Both mother and daughter experienced identical gastric intestinal disorder, characterised by severe cramps, nausea, sweating, sickness and diarrhoea.

Salmonella due to poor hotel hygiene

Simpson Millar's Claire Rabbetts explained that the 39-year-old had contracted a salmonella infection. "This is likely to have occurred at the hotel because of its dubious hygiene practises," she said.

Subsequent medical tests revealed that our clients had suffered gastric intestinal disorders by way of either viral, protozoa or a bacterial parasite, ingested as a result of the consumption of contaminated food, drinking water and/or swimming pool water provided at the hotel.

Was holiday firm negligent?

Slip trip and fall injury and accident abroad

"Our client raised a number of issues in terms of the accommodation's quality and standards, which should have been taken care of by the defendant," Claire observed.

"No-one should expect to go on holiday and pick up an infection such as salmonella. But this clearly ruined the holiday experience for our client, who was forced to look after her daughter who was also unwell."

No comment yet from TUI

Claire said this is an ongoing case. "We are at medical evidence stage and, other than confirming an investigation, the defendant is yet to comment. We've therefore some way to go before any potential settlement.

"In time, depending on the defendant's eventual position in respect of liability, we may need the input of a local Egyptian expert and also a barrister."
