We are currently representing a family of three who suffered cryptosporidium following their family holiday at the Zoraida Resort, Costa de Almeria in Spain.

This hotel is advertised by Thomas Cook, a major UK tour operator, as being a family hotel with extensive facilities including a large swimming pool. What were not advertised by Thomas Cook were the issues which they were aware of at the hotel in terms of numerous holidaymakers reporting illness.

Anyone can be affected by the illness, but it is more common in children. The illness can be unpleasant and includes symptoms of watery diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and fever. Some people think they are starting to feel better and that they have managed to get rid of the infection but only to find the symptoms reoccur.

Thomas Cook admits liability

On a more positive note, Thomas Cook has recently admitted liability for our clients’ illnesses and has shown a willingness to try and resolve their cases upon receipt of medical evidence. We are in the process of finalising medical evidence which will assist with the progression and eventual resolution of matters.

What is Cryptosporidium?

A parasite that causes an infection; often associated with untreated drinking water and is often located within swimming pools.

Cryptosporidium can be contracted through drinking contaminated water or food, undercooked meat, unpasteurised milk or as a result of person to person contact. This is another reason why cryptosporidium is often associated with swimming pools.

How can you avoid getting cryptosporidiosis?

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water:
    • before preparing and eating food
    • after handling raw food
    • after going to the toilet or changing a baby’s nappy
    • after going to the toilet or changing a baby’s nappy
    • after working, feeding, grooming or playing with pets and other animals.
  • Do not drink untreated water
  • Do not use ice or drinking water in countries where the water supply might be unsafe
  • Always wash and/or peel fruits and vegetables before eating them

If you have been affected by illness following your holiday at the Zoraida Resort, or any other overseas holiday we would be interested to hear from you, as you may be entitled to thousands of pounds in compensation as a result of failures by the tour operator and the hotel.
