Travellers’ Diarrhoea refers to the most common form of gastroenteritis contracted whilst travelling abroad. The Dominican Republic, a popular destination for UK holidaymakers, is often the source and cause for many Brits returning home with travellers’ diarrhoea.

Travellers’ Diarrhoea encompasses and describes a number of different symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, fatigue, fever and nausea.   • Birds, insects, cats and lizards freely roaming around the hotel dining areas
  • Dirty Hotel swimming pool water
  • Contaminated drinking water

Symptoms and Treatment of Travellers’ Diarrhoea


  • Common symptoms include; headaches, fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps, blood in stools
  • More severe symptoms include; dehydration, dizziness, confusion, lethargy and weakness, loss of consciousness, death.

Children and the Elderly are those most at risk if they are not treated quickly.

Treatment is usually through over-the-counter medicines and it is important to maintain an intake of fluids to keep fully hydrated to prevent dehydration.

It symptoms persist for more than 24 hours then it is important that you seek advice and treatment from your GP in the UK who may prescribe you antibiotics.

How to prevent Travellers’ Diarrhoea

Hotel

  • Staff should thoroughly wash and clean hands before starting to prepare or handle any food
  • The Hotel should ensure that all food preparation areas and kitchen utensils are spotlessly clean
  • All frozen food should be defrosted completely before cooking
  • Ensure that all cooked food is served piping hot and cooked all the way through
  • Prohibit all animals from the restaurant to prevent them contaminating the food
  • Any reheated food must be piping hot before being served
  • Cover all raw food such as meat and fish
  • Ensure food such as milk, cream, cold meats and salad is correctly and properly refrigerated
  • Wash all fruit and vegetables thoroughly before use

Guests

  • Wash hands frequently especially after using the toilet and handling local currency
  • Carry and use anti-bacterial wipes
  • Only drink bottled water
  • Avoid swimming in dirty pool water
