Latest Guidelines for the Assessment of Holiday Illness Claims

Reports on compensation awards made by the courts of England and Wales were released on 2nd September 2010.The latest guidelines state how much can you claim for your holiday illness:

£25,250 to £34,500 - Severe gastric illness with bouts of acute pain, vomiting and diarrhoea requiring hospital admission for days or weeks resulting in continuing symptoms which impact on life.

£6,300 to £12,600 - Serious but short lived bouts of food poisoning diminishing over a two year period with continuing discomfort and disturbance of bowel function.

£,600 to £6,300 - Food poisoning symptoms which last for a few weeks but complete recovery within 2 years

£600 to £2,600 - Varying degrees of disabling pain, cramps and diarrhoea lasting several weeks

Common Holiday Gastric Infections

Holiday Illnesses are caused by bacteria, viruses or other parasites infecting the gastrointestinal tract, which is made up of the Stomach - Large and Small Intestines - Esophagus - Anus and Mouth. Gastric infection is not normally life-threatening, but it does cause people to have diarrhoea.

Gastrointestinal infections are often caused by food poisoning, which occurs when infectious agents create toxins in food that is handled or stored improperly. Common bacteria and parasites that cause the infection are Campylobacter – Salmonella - E. coli – Giardiasis - Amebiasis and Cryptosporidium.

10 Ways of Avoiding Holiday Illness

  • Always wash your hands before you eating as this reduces the risk of Shigella which is often spread from person to person both directly and indirectly via the oral-faecal route
  • Never eat undercooked food, particularly chicken, beef and eggs unless you wish to endure Salmonella and Campylobacter food poisoning
  • Avoid food that is served at a luke warm temperature and that which is permitted to stand in heat for long periods – bacteria such as Salmonella breeds quickly in such conditions
  • Ensure that utensils are clean and that the chef cooking on the buffet uses different implements to avoid cross contamination when handling raw meat and then serving cooked foods
  • Avoid eating with your fingers wherever possible especially if you have just handled foreign money
  • Do not drink tap water in Greece or Egypt because it often contains E coli – drink from a bottle
  • Avoid swimming in dirty swimming pools otherwise you will be exposed to waterborne infections such as Cryptosporidium or Giardia
  • 50% of birds carry Campylobacter on their claws and beaks and so be observant and avoid food that has been contaminated either directly or indirectly by faecal spread
  • Flies on food spread salmonella – avoid uncovered food
