Sickness at the Catalonia Royal in the Dominican Republic

Our Holiday Illness Compensation Specialists have been made aware of a potential illness outbreak at the Catalonia Royal in the Dominican Republic.

Holiday Illness

Holidaymakers returning from the hotel with symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps and nausea have raised issue with the levels of hygiene at the property.

Amongst other things, we have been advised that the swimming pool was contaminated with bird faeces and was poorly maintained. We have also been advised that the food in the restaurant was allowed to stand for lengthy periods of time and was exposed to contamination from birds in the restaurant before being served at lukewarm and unhygienic temperatures.

We would advise anyone returning from this hotel with symptoms of gastric illness to seek medical treatment without delay. Andrew Tarling, Simpson Millar’s Holiday Compensation Manager has warned that;

“Swimming in an inadequately maintained swimming pool and eating contaminated food can cause holidaymakers to contract serious infectious diseases including Cryptosporidium, E-coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter. These can cause serious problems, particularly if contracted by children or the elderly. It is important that these diseases are identified and are treated at the earliest opportunity.”
