Food Poisoning and Shigella Claims at Coral Sea Waterworld, Egypt

Illness suffered at First Choice’s Splash Hotel

Simpson Millar LLP's travel team have been instructed by a group of holidaymakers who have been diagnosed with Shigella following a well-earned all inclusive family holiday to Egypt.

One family has described various failing in the hygiene practice at the all-inclusive hotel including undercooked meat, birds in the restaurant, food contaminated with flies, dirty communal toilets, together with a number of other unsavoury practices.

Simon Lomax, Simpson Millar LLP’s Accident and Illness manager says: "My clients have advised me that well over 30 people were ill on IV drips at the hotel, with others being directed to the pharmacy for antibiotics by the local Rep."

"Holidaymakers who have been ill at the Hotel are advised to contact us urgently. There is always strength in numbers in such cases, and those who have not tested positive for harmful bacteria following a stool test can rely on those that have."

The Coral Sea Waterworld is located near Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt and is graded as a 4 star hotel by British Tour Operator, First Choice.

The Hotels facilities include:

  • A new waterpark
  • 3 restaurants
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • 'Jaw dropping body slides'

Accommodation of this standard should not be a source of a Shigella outbreak.

Can I claim compensation?

If you travel with First Choice Holidays you will have purchased a regulated package holiday. Regulation 15 of the Package Travel Regulations 1992 allows you to claim compensation in the UK for the failings of either the tour operator and/or the Hotel’s staff.

The majority of food poisoning claims brought by British travellers occurring in all inclusive hotels abroad are brought under the 1992 Regulations. Your holiday company is responsible to each person travelling for the proper performance of the obligations arising under the holiday contract.

Holidaymakers should not be exposed to Shigella dysentery, a gastric illness which gives rise to diarrhoea, cramps, vomiting, and fever or varying decrees
