£20,000 Compensation for Illness at the Tropicana Sea Splash Hotel in Egypt

A family from Shropshire have received separate compensation awards totalling more than £20,000 for gastric illness suffered on a holiday to the Tropicana Sea Splash Hotel, Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt – as reported in the Shropshire Star.

The highest award of £12,000 was made to Miss Lees who required medication for diarrhoea upon returning from the holiday and her father, James Hammond, aged 45, who was awarded £4,000.

The experience of the family is one that is all too common to Simpson Millar LLP’s holiday claims department that specialise in helping people claim compensation for illness suffered on package holidays to overseas destinations sold in the UK.

First Choice Sued

The family in this case were part of a group of over 70 people that sued First Choice for traveller’s diarrhoea symptoms at the same hotel in 2012. Simpson Millar LLP are now representing a group of over more than 250 holiday makers that experienced similar illnesses, including Shigella, at the Coral Sea Waterworld, also in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Paul Stevens, Simpson Millar LLP's Group Holiday Claims Manager, advised "each year by far the most common destination that we are contacted about in respect of holiday illness is Egypt. The only saving grace is that there is powerful legislation under the Package Travel Regulations that enables unlucky consumers to pursue their tour operators for compensation, if there has been negligence by the holiday company or by staff at the hotels they sell."

Paul advised "I am obviously delighted for Miss Lees and Mr Hammond in terms of the holiday compensation awarded although the illness suffered could have potentially been avoided had hotel staff taken greater care over cleanliness and hygiene."

Miss Lees added that the Tropicana Sea Splash hotel was dirty, and that people were saying that the staff were "mixing raw chicken and vegetables".
