Holiday Illness Complaint

Children Hospitalised in Marina Parc Illness Outbreak

We have been instructed by dozens of holidaymakers who have become unwell with symptoms often associated with food poisoning whilst staying at the Marina Parc in Arenal d’en Castell, Menorca. Since an article on Kevin Kiernan's 10 month old daughter being hospitalised was published by the Mirror we have received further reports of children being hospitalised at the First Choice advertised resort, as well as other guests falling ill.

Is Marina Parc's "Crowning Glory" Waterpark to Blame?

The Marina Parc is advertised by First Choice as a 4 star resort that is targeted to families with younger children who will get the most out of the large waterpark featured. First Choice describes the Marina Parc waterpark as the resorts "crowning glory, with pools, ring rides and slides to keep speed demons grinning like Cheshire cats." While the waterpark may be a big draw for young families, comments regarding the cleanliness of the swimming pools are of particular concern, as many of the children hospitalised by illness will likely have made a beeline for them on arrival.

Is There a Bigger Problem in Menorca?

The Marina Parc is not the only hotel in Menorca that is currently experiencing problems. We have been contacted by British tourists that have experienced similar symptoms at hotels and resorts in Menorca, suggesting that there may be a larger problem with hygiene in resorts on the Spanish island, such as the Holiday Village Menorca and the Hotel Viva Menorca.

What Has Caused this Outbreak?

Holidaymakers at the Marina Parc have yet to receive results of tests to confirm the pathogens which may have caused illness, but it appears from the symptoms being described by returning guests that a serious bacterial or parasitic infection is the cause of the problems experienced by at the Menorcan resort.

We have been advised that in addition to concerns over the cleanliness of the water at the Marina Parc, the standard of food hygiene is in question, as holidaymakers we have spoken to have reported that high risk foods such as sausages, bacon and other meats have been served to them so undercooked they were almost raw, with omelettes being served runny.

With the symptoms and conditions being described to us it's likely that the cause of illness is a bacterial or parasitic infection such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, E. coli or Cryptosporidium.
