Thomas Cook Complaints Rise as Illness Returns to Long Haul Destinations

Simpson Millar’s Travel Team has noticed a rise in the number of enquiries received from holidaymakers returning from hotels in the Dominican Republic who have suffered illness, many with symptoms consistent with food poisoning.

The island, notoriously known for illness in the late nineties, was given the nickname, The Septic Isle. In 1997 an outbreak affected 500 UK holidaymakers staying at 35 hotels, with 3 travellers also catching typhoid.

A survey by the Consumers' Association the following year established that 7 in 8 hotels were serving meat contaminated with food poisoning bacteria such as E.coli. Stricter food hygiene practices were introduced via the Federation of Tour Operators, but it is feared standards have slipped again.
