£4,000 Win After Salmonella at Gran Bahia Principe Resort in Tulum, Mexico

The holidaymaker began to feel ill with severe stomach cramps and developed diarrhoea on the third day of her 14-day, all-inclusive Mexico holiday.

She took over-the-counter anti-diarrhoea medication and carried on with her holiday in Tulum, despite continuing to suffer symptoms of traveller’s diarrhoea.

Salmonella holiday illness

The symptoms continued after the holidaymaker returned home to the UK – and just three days after returning to work she had to take sick leave.

She saw a GP to discuss her symptoms, which included headaches, abdominal cramps and chest pains. After a visit to hospital, she was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism – a condition in which a blood clot causes a blockage in a blood vessel supplying the lungs, the symptoms of which include chest pains.

A stool sample later confirmed a Salmonella infection.

The holidaymaker had to take six weeks off from work to recover from her Mexico holiday illness.

Simpson Millar’s holiday claims lawyers who took on the case had contacted a consultant surgeon, who agreed Salmonella was the cause of the gastric illness – and also diagnosed a post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome. The expert concluded that eggs she had eaten at the Gran Bahia Principe Resort in Tulum were the most likely source of the Salmonella infection.

But despite all the evidence sent to Thomas Cook, the tour operator failed to respond and a claim against the company was prepared.

An offer of £4,000 was eventually made by the tour operator and accepted by the holidaymaker in settlement of her no win no fee holiday illness claim against Thomas Cook.
