£240,000 for Holidaymaker Blinded by Black Worm inside Red Snapper Fish - Dominican Republic Food Poisoning Compensation Claim

Holiday in the Dominican Republic Left me Blind...

British holiday maker Beryl Rushton, 66, of Accrington, Lancashire, received a compensation award of £240,000 from First Choice Holidays after suffering food poisoning at the Hacienda Tropical Beach Resort in Puerto Plata – Dominican Republic more than seven years ago.

Mrs Rushton settled to enjoy a red snapper fish meal at the all-inclusive hotel when she bit into the fish and found she had also bitten into a black worm inside the fish.

She reportedly described her experience saying "When I bit into my red snapper I saw a big black worm with blood round it in the middle of my fish".

Within hours she started to suffer from horrendous stomach pains.

Her condition worsened and in a short period of time caused organ failure, temporary blindness and septicaemia leaving Mrs Ruston fighting for her life.

After being diagnosed with bacterial gastroenteritis doctors then identified that the infection caused by the worm had attacked her brain, liver and pancreas.

Mrs Rushton is now mainly confined to a wheelchair and has to take 23 tablets a day. She only has 30 per cent use of her left side and has devoted time to writing a book about her illness titled "To Hell and Back, and Back Again" - Reported October 2009.
