Shigella, Salmonella and Food Poisoning drives Egyptian Compensation Claims

Holiday Illness Compensation - Shigella – Red Sea Holiday Village – Salmonella – Tropicana Club Azure – Dysentery – Egypt – Cryptosporidium - Holiday Illness Claim

Egypt is the land of ancient history and excitement that has drawn UK holidaymakers for centuries. Unlike European holiday destinations, value for money and its climate makes Egypt especially attractive.

Whether travelling to Sharm el Sheik – Taba – Hurgada - Marsa Matruh or on a Nile cruise however the dilemma is the same. According to the Communicable Disease Centre "travellers’ diarrhoea" is a common ailment affecting over 50% of holidaymakers visiting Egypt.

Simon Lomax, Simpson Millar’s Holiday Illness Claims Manager says:

"Travellers’ diarrhoea is usually acquired by the ingestion of faecally contaminated food or water. Both cooked and uncooked foods can be implicated if they have been improperly handled."

"The organisms most commonly associated with travellers’ diarrhoea are E.coliSalmonellaCampylobacterShigella - Rotavirus and Giardia."

"In summer 2010 many holidaymakers returning from Egypt claim to have suffered from infective gastroenteritis caused by the food borne bacteria Salmonella or Shigella. A large number of those holiday makers are now seeking to claim compensation for the nightmare holiday that they experienced."

"Whilst I acknowledge that hotels in many developing holiday destinations struggle with food safety and hygiene, if a coordinated approach is taken by the UK’s largest tour operators, i.e. Thomson – First Choice and Thomas Cook, then improvements in hygiene could be achieved."

"However, the authorities claim that food hygiene problems often intersect with wider public health needs and progress is hindered if problems such as poverty, social unrest and political instability continue to be evident in Egypt."

"Holidaymakers might not stop travelling to Egypt due to a few reports of Shigella of Salmonella food poisoning, however widespread reporting of severe cases, and class action compensation claims, will make UK tour operators more selective, and bring pressure on Egypt’s tourist industry to clean up its act."

Simon continues to say:

"We are currently representing a large number of families who claim they were subjected to either Cryptosporidium – Shigella or Salmonella food poisoning whilst staying at First Choice’s Red Sea Holiday Village in Egypt in 2010."

"Similar bacterium has been implicated in an outbreak of illness at the Tropicana Club Azure – a hotel which has had problems with the Shigella and Salmonella which we believe can be linked to the consumption of contaminated food."

"I am seeking to recover substantial compensation for these holidaymakers who travelled on package holidays and who we believe suffered food poisoning whilst in Egypt due to poor hygiene."
