Two Briton’s Killed in Holiday Coach Crash

Simpson Millar’s Holiday Accident and Illness Claims Manager, reflects upon on the most disturbing holiday coach accident of his career.

Simon Lomax says coach accidents are common in Turkey where poor vehicle maintenance, difficult road and infrequent police checks contribute to one of the worst fatality rates in the world.

In my previous position as MyTravel Group's Personal Injury Litigation Manager I had to deal with a horrific incident when a coach careered down a mountain side. Two British holidaymakers were killed when a coach veered off a steep mountain path ploughing through a group of sunbathers on a busy Turkish Beach.

The coach was transferring 25 tourists from Dalaman airport to hotels in Olu Deniz, on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, when its brakes failed at the top of a steep mountain pass. The bus shot across a T-junction at the bottom of the road, smashing into a minibus, before careering across the beach into the sea.

It was a miracle more people were not killed in what could only be described as a very frightening holiday accident – the skills of the driver prevented the coach from veering off the steep winding road and down the shear rock face.

Passengers were inevitably traumatised and feared for their lives. The tour operator sent counsellors and an investigation team to the scene of the holiday accident but inevitably faced holiday compensation claims from passengers claiming post traumatic stress disorder.
