Majorca – British Girl, Aged 5, Fighting for Life after Falling from Hotel Balcony

Holiday in Majorca left a little girl with serious injuries...

A British girl aged five was left fighting for her life in hospital after plunging 30 feet from a hotel balcony in Majorca.

Millianne Marklew was on the first day of a family holiday when she is believed to have fallen from the 3rd floor balcony as she played.

She suffered multiple injuries and was taken to intensive care in the island's main hospital where her parents Mairead, 38, a manicurist, and 40-year-old Adam, a supermarket worker, kept a vigil.

Millianne has a sister Jade, 11, and a four-year-old brother, Addison, who were also on the holiday as was their grandmother, Patricia Marklew.

The family, from Hinckley, Leicestershire, were staying at the 3-star Gran Playa Hotel in the resort of Sa Coma on Majorca's east coast when Millianne was injured.

From his home in Hinckley, grandfather Edward Marklew, 88, said: "Millie has a broken arm, a broken leg and internal bleeding in her abdomen. I don't know what her precise condition is."

"Adam and Mairead had saved really hard for the trip. It's their main holiday of the year, and the children were so excited about it. They flew out from East Midlands Airport on Saturday so I suppose Millie must have fallen not long after they arrived at the hotel. My wife flew out with them."

"I've no idea how this happened, but Millie is a normal little girl. You need eyes in the back of your head when children are about."

A source at the Son Dureta Hospital in Majorca's capital, Palma, said: "Her condition is very serious."

"She is currently under sedation in intensive care and being helped to breathe."

A worker at the hotel, which overlooks the Mediterranean and caters mainly for British tourists, said: "The little girl's family are all at the hospital with her. We have no news about her condition but we're obviously very worried."

Police have interviewed hotel staff and holidaymakers as a matter of routine and found no evidence of foul play. A Civil Guard spokesman said: "Everything at this stage is pointing towards the girl falling by accident."

"The hotel Gran Playa has 177 rooms on seven floors. Rooms have either a balcony or terrace" – Reported Daily Mail, 13 October 2008.
