Cryptosporidium Illness Spreads at El Greco Hotel in Portinax, Ibiza

A British holidaymaker has been confirmed as having contracted the parasitic infection Cryptosporidium, after staying at the El Greco Hotel in Portinax, Ibiza.

Cryptosporidium is a serious parasitic infection in which the parasite survives in cysts and in ingested when water contaminated with human faeces is swallowed. Cryptosporidium is commonly found in swimming pools which have not been disinfected properly.

The infection causes severe stomach cramps, sickness and diarrhoea, fever and headaches. Cryptosporidium can spread quickly among holidaymakers if hotel management fails to ensure swimming pool water is tested daily and treated with chemicals like chlorine.

The Marconfort El Greco Hotel is a 3-star beachfront property used mainly by families with young children.

The hotel operates on an all-inclusive board basis and reviews on Tripadvisor are generally favourable, but some guests who stayed in October mention smelly rooms and a poor attitude among staff, to which the manager has responded.

A reviewer posting on TripAdvisor on 9 October mentions that food is poor and generally reheated and re-served – and that the swimming pool is small for the size of the hotel, with a cramped poolside area.

There is also a small water park at the hotel, which consist of five slides leading into the main pool, which is fairly old. Cryptosporidium is an infection which can easily take hold and survive for long periods in water. The parasite is often responsible for closing down swimming pools or water parks and can develop resistance to some chemicals used for disinfecting public pools.
