Cuba Struck by ‘Castro Gastro’ Holiday Illness Bug

Gastroenteritis Food Poisoning image

Simpson Millar’s specialist Holiday Claims Solicitors have been contacted by angry holidaymakers returning from Cuba seeking compensation for holidays ruined by sickness following an outbreak of gastric illness that has struck the Cuban resort of Holguin.

Travellers arriving home are describing horrendous experiences and the latest news reports describe plane loads of Canadian tourists also falling ill to a bug. Some Canadian reports concern the Sol Rio de Luna y Mares – a hotel used by the UK’s largest tour operators, Thomson Holidays and Thomas Cook.

Holguin Holiday Hell

Symptoms of the bug include violent bouts of diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and headaches.

Nick Harris, Head of Travel Law at Simpson Millar said;

“I am very concerned by the reports we are hearing and urge anyone who has fallen victim to sickness to consult their GP straight away and insist that a stool sample be tested.

The symptoms are those that are associated with infections common to Cuba such as Hepatitis A, and Bacterial Traveller’s Diarrhoea.

If the sickness outbreak has been caused by poor sanitation, hygiene or food poisoning I will be addressing this with the tour operators concerned and ensuring my clients receive substantial compensation”

Bacterial and Parasitic Travellers Diarrhoea -

Frequently acquired by holidaymakers who ingest water contaminated by faecal matter.

Risk foods include undercooked meat, seafood, fruits and vegetables. Infected food handlers can transfer bacteria if they fail to exercise hygienic food handling procedures. Types of bacterial diarrhoea include Salmonella and Campylobacter.

Tap water, ice and unpasteurised milk are also common sources of bacterial infections. The sources are often harbors for parasitic bugs such as Cryptosporidium and Giardiasis.

Symptoms of bacterial and parasitic stomach infections include profuse diarrhoea and in some case vomiting and in a reduced number bloody stools and fever.

Hepatitis A

Usually passed on from person to person Hepatitis A is a virus that causes liver disease.

The virus is spread by ingesting food or drink contaminated by the stool of an infected person.

Symptoms of Hepatitis A include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, tiredness and fever.
