Illness at Thomas Cook Sunrise Tirana Aqua Park in Egypt

There have been reports on TripAdvisor of an outbreak of food poisoning at the Thomas Cook Sunrise Tirana Aqua Park Hotel in Sharm El Sheikh.

Several of the reviews of the Sunrise Tirana Aqua Park mention indifferent food at the hotel, but a reviewer posting on 5 October mentions that her young daughter suffered from stomach illness for nearly a week while at the hotel – and she herself experience stomach cramps after every meal.

The hotel was previously at the centre of outbreaks of holiday food poisoning in 2010, when guests suffered profuse diarrhoea and severe stomach cramps.

Another guest posting on 4 October 2012 describes the poor maintenance at the hotel, with paint flaking off the shower in their room, as well as a musty smell and ants running over the bedroom floor. They also mentioned that the food was poor, with mashed potato and jelly at breakfast, suggesting leftover food was being reheated or re-served.

This reviewer describes the overall standard of the food as “awful” – and also mentions that the swimming pools had “dirty stuff” floating in them, with green mould on the swimming pool steps.

Holiday food poisoning can easily occur if general hygiene at a hotel is poor, or food is reheated and served without being thoroughly warmed through.

Holiday Hotel Watch

Insects can also spread infection, especially if they are allowed to crawl near areas where food is being served.

Dirty swimming pools can also spread bacterial and parasitic infections like Salmonella, E.Coli and Cryptosporidium if swimmers ingest water contaminated with human or animal faeces.
