Reports of Illness & Contaminated Pool at Holiday Village Red Sea

Simpson Millar has received reports of a suspected outbreak of holiday diarrhoea from guests who stayed at the Holiday Village Red Sea in August 2013.

Food poisoning along with sickness and diarrhoea are frequent occurrences at the First Choice Holiday Village in Egypt’s popular tourist destination Sharm El Sheikh – and the Holiday Village Red Sea was featured in a report by Watchdog last year on which Simpson Millar’s Head of Travel Nick Harris acted as a legal adviser.

The all-inclusive Holiday Village Red Sea is popular with families and recent reviews on Tripadvisor have mentioned “incidents” in the hotel swimming pool which led to it being closed and drained for cleaning. First Choice allegedly also issued letters to all guests warning them they would be fined and sent home at their own cost if they soiled the swimming pool.

Pools contaminated with faeces or urine is one way in which bacterial or parasitic infections such as E.Coli or Cryptosporidium can be transferred between guests.

"Poor Food" says Holidaymakers on Tripadvisor

Although some Tripadvisor reviews of the Holiday Village Red Sea remain positive, other guests complain about “poor food” in some of the restaurants – including the main buffet restaurant which was described by one reviewer as “busy and chaotic”.

Overcrowded dining areas can mean lapses in hygiene and food preparation – and cross-contamination of serving and cooking utensils can spread bacteria such as Salmonella and E.coli among guests.

Diarrhoea Symptoms at Red Sea Holiday Village

The same reviewer also mentions that the pools were often closed at the hotel as a result of guests contaminating the water with faeces – and this may in turn suggest a problem with bouts of uncontrollable diarrhoea affecting some holidaymakers at the Holiday Village Red Sea – symptoms which are typical of Salmonella, E.coli, Cryptosporidium or Campylobacter.

This reviewer also commented on the general cleanliness of the Holiday Village Red Sea – and issues with health and safety which could lead to injuries on holiday:

Holiday Hotel Watch

“Room was very spacious but very poorly lit with dim lighting. Whilst it seemed clean on closer inspection it needed a good scrub around the edges How often are the rooms deep-cleaned?

“…Beware: Cleaners work really hard but do mad things like soaking the communal floors in corridors etc at the peak times of day which make them very slippery!!…Pools and pool area weren't particularly clean, poorly swept, tables sticky with a nasty smell coming from cold drink area at the quiet pool bar.” (Vanman123 26 August 2013)
