Reports of vomiting and diarrhoea bug

While there are a few positive reviews for the Riu Vistamar on TripAdvisor, there are a few reports of guests either suffering at the hands of a sickness bug or encountering others who have:

Arundel holidaymaker 'kevin m' stayed at the Riu Vistamar "at the end of August" with his daughter, granddaughter and parents, and says that on "the night of [their] first full day [he came] down with violent and relentless sickness and diarrhoea". He continues to say that he "must have been sick 20 times in the first 24 hours and was so bad that on day two [his] partner had no choice but to call a Doctor out". Upon arriving the doctor ominously indicated towards his partner and informed her that "you will get it too". That night his "partner [came] down with it and [they] were both in bed another two days".

'stepmar2016' from Falkirk stayed at the resort in October and says that along with their partner they "came down with a dreadful sickness and diarrhoea bug", with their "partner [being] sick 2 days before the end of our holiday and ['stepmar2016'], on the day that [they] were travelling home."

'barmaidlor' also stayed in October and says that on their last night their "daughter became […] very sick" before suffering "diarrhoea 2 days later". They add that the daughter of another family they were travelling with "has also come down with this bug" and they believe that there is "a problem" that is mainly affecting children, and "they need to test the water in [a] pool where the Jacuzzi is, as [it] isn't working and may be harbouring stagnant water in the jet streams causing this bug."

In his review titled "Lovely hotel watch out for a vomiting diarrhoea bug" Arbroath holidaymaker 'StephenP814' says that his "daughter [aged] 13 went down with a violent tummy bug and was sick quite a few times [as well as suffering from] diarrhoea" and still "hasn't [fully recovered] 2 days after coming home." They add that their "friends have just text to say [that their] daughter has gone down with it tonight", and they have spoken "to another guest [whose] wife was laid up with it."

Unknown cause of illness

From these reviews what has caused these unfortunate holidaymakers to become unwell is by no means clear. It's possible that the symptoms that they have been suffering are being spread from person to person, without an identifiable source such as contaminated water or food.

While infections of this nature are often caused by a person, another potential cause of these types of symptoms can be contaminated pool water, which children are usually susceptible to because they can tend to drink it. If swimming pools aren't effectively maintained they can spread diseases such as Cryptosporidium which can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, fever, abdominal pain and dehydration, and other diseases which can result in the symptoms of Gastroenteritis.

What to do if you're sick on holiday

Many diseases that cause symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting can only be diagnosed through the appropriate tests, often requiring a stool sample. If you become unwell on a package holiday and want to ensure that you receive the appropriate treatment, it's advisable to ask that your doctor carries out these tests.
