Tropitel Sahl Hasheesh - paradise or nightmare?

The Tropitel Sahl Hasheesh is located in the Hurghada region of Egypt and offered by UK based tour operator Thomas Cook. The all-inclusive is advertised as featuring a central pool surrounded by gardens that give the impression of a "paradise". Despite offering a range of activities and dining experiences, guests have been leaving scathing comments for the Egyptian hotel.

Possible problems with hygiene and holiday illness

While there are a few positive comments about the Tropitel Sahl Hasheesh, there are quite a few negative reviews for the Egyptian hotel, with reviewers on TripAdvisor complaining about the standard of service and lack of attention paid to the behaviour of some of the guests. Concerningly, a number of reviewers highlighted issues with hygiene, some of which may have contributed to the spread of a stomach bug.

Bath holidaymaker 'SpringandSummer' stayed at the Tropitel Sahl Hasheesh in September after booking through Thomas Cook. They say that "the food was awful", potentially due to a perception that the buffet "trays were all cold" as "the heat lamps did not heat" adequately enough. This may have been what led them to suffer a "stomach Bug by day 4".

'nussaaaa' also stayed at the Tropitel Sahl Hasheesh in September, and says that the Egyptian hotel has "hygienic problems", including "uncleaned pillows and covers" and a bad "smell" emanating from the "rooms and toilets."

'Michael N' was a guest around the same time and says that "it was the worst hotel experience" in what he describes as "a dirty place".

Bristol holidaymaker 'Miss L' was a guest at the Tropitel Sahl Hasheesh in October and says that the "food was terrible" and "always cold", resulting in her partner having "to go to pharmacy to get tablets due to stomach issues".

'pappaj67' from Blackpool also travelled there this October and says that "the food is garbage" and his "wife is in hospital with serious food poisoning", which he says is due to the "food [being] left out without regard for proper temp control and food regulations".

Cold buffet could be causing food poisoning pathogen to spread

Poor catering standards are usually a recipe for disaster, whether as a result of inadequate facilities, training or a lack of team members to keep up with demand. One of the most common complaints we hear from British tourists is cold buffet food, and it's unsurprising as dishes that have been allowed to reach dangerous room temperatures can become the perfect breeding ground for food poisoning pathogens.

The many illnesses you can catch on holiday

This can include harmful bacteria such as E. coli O157, Campylobacter and Salmonella, and parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora, all of which are capable of inducing debilitating symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea and potentially vomiting.

A lack of hygiene can also be a cause of infection as unsanitary conditions develop over time, allowing holiday ruining illnesses to breed. They also produce an environment in which infections can easily be spread by sick guests and members of staff, making this an issue that every hotel, particularly all-inclusive hotels; need to address.
