Food poisoning and under cooked food reported at Grand Bahia Principe Coba

Recent TripAvisor reviews have reported issues with the food at the Grand Bahia Principe Coba in Akumal, Mexico. One reviewer even reported stomach sickness as a result of under cooked food, with other reviewers consistently pointing out that their food was served cold in the resort's various restaurants.

The Grand Bahia Principle Coba is located on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, just a short shuttle bus from its very own private beach and a 25 minute drive from Playa del Carmen. The resort itself offers two enormous ‘lake-style’ pools with a swim up bar at each. Where dining is concerned, 6 à la cartes restaurants are available, including a gourmet and a sushi bar.

Reviewers report issues with the food and stomach sickness

The Grand Bahia Principe Coba is rated quite favourably on TripAdvisor, attaining an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 based on 14,160 user submitted reviews. One reviewer, however, stated that they suffered from food poisoning during their stay at the resort; they went on to suggest this was due to the food not being served at the appropriate temperature.

‘AmandaR306’ left a review titled ‘Overall good but Tulum or Akumal are better’. In her review AmandaR306 explained that during her stay she “Got food poisoning at the Gourmet restaurant” and that in regards to the food itself “the stuffed chicken with lobster inside was not cooked enough”. The reviewer was “Sick all night afterwards”. In regards to the quality food at the main buffet, the reviewer stated it was “not the freshest”.

Another review titled “Some complaints but overall a great trip” by ‘Emma B’ pointed to similar concerns with the food. While the review overall was quite positive, Emma B stated that “The other reviews remarking that the food is sometimes not warm are accurate, which is a bit concerning”.

‘Victor M’ left a review titled ”Third time in Grand Bahia, Mayan Rivera” in which he explained that while the food was prepared correctly, on occasion it would be “delivered cold”.

A reviewer by the screen name ‘LFS517’ submitted a review titled “Wonderful Trip, Some Room for Improvement”. In the review, they mention that “Some of the food at the main buffet was cold when it should have been hot”.

Food poisoning and food preparation

Food poisoning is typically caused by harmful bacteria such as Salmonella or E.Coli. These bacteria can contaminate food in a number of ways, for instance, if there are hygiene issues where the food is prepared, if the person handling the food is infected or if the food is not stored in the correct conditions. Harmful bacteria can sometimes be present in the food long before it has reached the resort where it is served, and so it is vital all food be cooked all the way through to avoid infection.

Serving food that is still partially raw, or has not been cooked or served at the proper temperatures holds an increased likelihood of making you ill.

If you do suffer from food poisoning while on holiday you will most likely experience the following symptoms: vomiting, diarrhoea, tiredness, stomach pain, nausea, headaches or fever. If you feel unwell and think you are suffering from food poisoning make sure to visit a GP immediately.

Excess vomiting and diarrhoea can leave you at risk from dehydration, so if you are affected, be sure to have plenty of fluids.
